Steve Vargo's Obituary


HUBBARD Steve Vargo, 94, of Hubbard, died Saturday morning, July 19, 2008 at Liberty Health Care Center. He was born on April 24, 1914, in Hubbard, a son of Michael and Susan Boer Vargo and was a lifelong Hubbard resident.

Mr. Vargo was a superintendent for Olberg Manufacturing for 37 years, retiring in 1976. After retiring, he was the supervisor for the Hubbard Park and Recreation Board for ten years, taking great pride in supervising young adults improving and maintaining the parks and playgrounds. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during WWII. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and was a prisoner of war from December 17, 1944 to April 29, 1945 in Germany. Steve was a national and local life member of the Ex POW's and served on the board of the Mahoning Valley Ex POW Chapter, he volunteered at the VA Clinic on Belmont Avenue in Youngstown and was a member of the VFW. Steve was of the Presbyterian faith and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, gardening and cooking and rooting for the Hubbard Eagles.

He leaves his wife, the former Mary E. Nagy, whom he married on August 3, 1946; three sons, Stephen M. (Linda) Vargo of Adrian, MI, Donald W. (Barbara) Vargo of Canfield and Dr. Ronald G. (Julie) Vargo of Columbus; two daughters, Carol S. (David) Gray of Gloucester, MA and Elaine M. Puckett of Girard; a sister, Violet Popa of Masury; ten grandchildren, Tiffany, Michelle, Aaron, Matthew, Nathan, Kelley, David, Kristine, Steven and Brianna and three great-grandchildren, Micah, Lydia and Anna.

His parents, three brothers, Michael Vargo Jr., Frank Vargo and John Vargo and two sisters, Pearl Hallsky and Margaret Darko, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home in Hubbard.

Family and friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
