HUBBARD Stanley E. Peterson died from surgery complications for pancreatic cancer on December 31, 2001 in Des Moines, IA. Born in Glencoe, Minnesota, a son of Eben C. and Lutie Strandquist Peterson.
Mr. Peterson graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. A World War II veteran, he completed Naval Officer's training at Columbia University and was the youngest to captain an LST ship. He remained extremely active with his former Naval LST crew. Mr. Peterson moved to the Shenango/Mahoning Valley and married Kathryn Thomas on July 5, 1947; they were married 54 years.
Mr. Peterson served for twenty eight years as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, including twenty years as the Senior Agent in Charge of the Youngstown Office of the FBI. After his retirement from the FBI, Mr. Peterson was in charge of corporate security at the former Mahoning National Bank and then was appointed Chief of Police of Youngstown, OH under the Richley and Vukovich administrations. In his latter years he worked as a special investigator with former U.S. Assistant Attorney General Doar examining an antitrust litigation involving the Union Pacific Railroad.
Mr. Peterson co-founded the Crime Clinic of Greater Youngstown, OH, a multidisciplinary group of law enforcement officials. He received numerous awards and honors for his service in law enforcement. He was also a member of the Youngstown Cambian Club. Mr. Peterson attained the honor of the Fourth Degree by the Knights of Columbus. He was a very involved member and long time usher at St. Patrick Church, Hubbard, OH.
Mr. Peterson is survived by his wife Kathryn of Hubbard; two sons, Dwight, an attorney in Philadelphia, PA and Gregory, a physician in Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Erin Rose and Blake. He is also survived by his sister, LaVonne Birnell of Minneapolis, MN.
Calling hours will be at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday and Friday. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 5, 10:00 AM at St. Patrick Church, Hubbard, preceded by a 9:30 AM service at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home.
