Obituary


HUBBARD Funeral services will be held 6:00 PM Monday at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home, Hubbard, for Robert H. Colburn, 89 of O'Brien Memorial Nursing Home, formerly of Princeton Ave, Hubbard, who died Saturday morning at the home following a long illness. He was born March 23, 1911, in Lockland, OH, a son of Robert and Anna Dranson Colburn, and lived most of his life in the Dayton, OH area moving to Hubbard in 1997.

Mr. Colburn was a 1935 graduate of Ohio State University, where he played on the basketball team and received his Masters Degree from Xavier University in 1956. He had a lustrous career in education serving as a Principal and basketball coach at Carlisle High School, Carlisle, OH, from 1953 until retiring in 1975. Prior to this he was a teacher and football coach at Wilbur Wright High School, Director of Personnel at Acme Aluminum Co. and a teacher and football coach at Roosevelt High School, all in Dayton, OH. In 1942 he coached a championship basketball team at Bowling Green High School, Bowling Green, OH, where he was a teacher and coach. Mr. Colburn started his career in education at West Carrollton High School, West Carrollton, OH as a teacher and coach.

He was a member of the Fairmont Presbyterian Church, Kettering, OH, the John W. Durst Lodge No. 0716 F&AM, Dayton, the Varsity O Association of Ohio State University, Miami Valley Officials Association and the Ohio High School Athletic Association. He was inducted into the Dayton Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 1963.

Mr. Colburn was a professional basketball player with the Indianapolis Kautskys, the Dayton Metros and the Dayton Air Gems. He officiated his last football game at the age of 75 after serving as a high school football and college basketball official for 40 years.

His wife, the former Sara Ankney, whom he married August 24, 1936, died December, 16, 1994. He leaves two sons, Robert M. Colburn of Dayton, OH and James Colburn of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Dorothy Tobey of Hubbard; a sister, Martha Ritter of Kettering, OH; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the funeral home one-hour prior to the service on Monday.

Burial will be in Miami Valley Memory Gardens, Kettering, OH.
