After graduation in 1966, he began working at Westinghouse Electric in Sharon, PA. He was drafted in 1967 into the U. S. Army, where he served as a vehicle mechanic and was stationed in Korea. After his discharge in 1969, he returned to Hubbard and to Westinghouse Electric.
He married Tamara Tetrick in 1977. Phil, Tami and daughter, Tara left Ohio for Arizona in 1979. Phil worked as an air conditioning and heating technician for customers throughout the Phoenix valley. Both Phil and Tami were active in the Phoenix Field and Obedience Club, where they taught dog obedience classes and showed dogs. Both volunteered for the Maricopa County's White Tanks Mounted Search and Rescue Posse in 1999. Since then they became certified to conduct horse sensory training programs for other posse members, conducted neighborhood patrols during the Rodeo/Chedeski fire, and participated in mall patrols during the Christmas holiday season.
At the time of his death, Phil and daughter Tara were returning to Arizona from a trip to Oklahoma. Phil was killed instantly when his truck lost control on a patch of black ice, flipped, and impacted to guardrail. Miraculously, Tara suffered only minor injuries.
