YOUNGSTOWN – Monte R. Smallwood, 77, passed away peacefully Sunday evening at Park Center Healthcare in Youngstown.
Monte was born September 3, 1949, in Youngstown, a son of the late Ernest and Ethel Hylton Smallwood, and remained a lifelong resident of the area. Monte worked for many years at Kessler Products, where he met the love of his life, the former Rose Pomaro. The couple married on June 27, 1984, and shared many wonderful years together.
Monte was a kind and gentle man who found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He had a love for art and enjoyed expressing his creativity through painting portraits. He also had a fascination with UFO’s and enjoyed watching television programs about the unexplained. Above all, Monte treasured the time he spent with his family and friends.
Monte leaves behind his two brothers, Ellery Smallwood of Austintown and Bernie Smallwood of Tennessee; two sisters, Betty Kelbel of Boardman and Debra Foster of Poland; and many loving nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. He also leaves behind the devoted Ariana from Compass, who cared for him with kindness and compassion and became extended family to him.
Besides his beloved wife, Rose, Monte was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Gary Smallwood; and two sisters, Janey Sloan and Judy Webster.
Monte will be fondly remembered for his gentle spirit, his unique interests, and the love he shared with those fortunate enough to know him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Family and friends may call on Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Kelley-Cummins Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM at the funeral home, with Brian Parish officiating.
Final resting place will be Calvary Cemetery.
