HUBBARD Miriam D. Ladley Hunkins, 90, of Hubbard, died Tuesday morning, February 21, 2006, at Liberty Health Care Center. She was born December 18, 1915, in Chicago, IL a daughter of William and Pearl Burke Spencer and lived in Hubbard until 1979, moving to Venice, FL, and moving back to Hubbard in October of 2001.
Her father was Vice President of Crowell-Collier Publications Co. of Chicago, Illinois. In June of 1929, Miriam, traveled with her family to all of the western states and Canada in their Graham-Paige Touring Car on a sightseeing trip. She attended high school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and then in Indianapolis, IN. She and her family later moved to Pittsburgh where she worked for the Sun Telegraph Newspaper.
Mrs. Hunkins was a teller for the former Dollar Savings & Trust in Hubbard for 28 years, retiring in 1978. She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hubbard.
She married, William E. "Buck" Ladley, on January 14, 1937, they lived in Mt. Washington, PA and then Bethel Park, PA. and had two children, Nancy and Kenneth. Miriam and her family moved to Hubbard in 1951 where her husband was a foreman for Republic Steel Corp. Miriam and Buck had many parties at their home on Parish Avenue for the bank employees, and Miriam played the organ for all of them. They also had a home at Roaming Rock Shores. He died in 1973 of a heart attack at the age of 58. Her mother, who was living with them, had passed away two weeks before her husband. After two years of living alone, Miriam decided to try her luck in Florida where it was warm. She left by herself in her Ford Thunderbird and ended up locating in Venice, FL for 23 years. She was involved in many activities and organizations. Miriam belonged to the Ladies Oriental Shrine Sar-I Court of Sarasota, FL, played in many style shows and events at the park where she lived in Bay Indies and also won many shuffleboard tournaments. She married Albert Hunkins in 1980 in Florida. After Albert died in 2000, Miriam moved back to the area when health became a problem for her to live alone and she made her home at Liberty Arms Assisted Living, where she entertained the residents with her organ music.
She leaves a son, Kenneth G. (Diana) Ladley of Strongsville, OH and a daughter, Nancy J. (George) Praznik of Hubbard; 8 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Her parents and two brothers, Harold and William Spencer preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home in Hubbard.
Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home and from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Friday, prior to the service.
