Obituary

DURHAM Mildred Cole Cheek Herring passed away December 6, 2015 at Park Vista in Youngstown Ohio. Mildred was born May 9, 1929 in Durham North Carolina to Eugene and Nellie Cole.

She attended grades 1 – 11 in the Durham public schools and graduated from high school in Jerome, Idaho (but she remained active with her class at Durham High for many years). She returned to Durham after high school and attended the Watts School of Nursing. She worked in nursing for a few years and then went to work at Home Savings and Loan where she worked her way up to branch manager. She was very active in the local chapter of the American Business Women's Association and was proud to have been named their "Woman of the Year" in 1969. She retired in 1979 to accompany her husband, E.G. Herring, as he traveled in his work. Over the next several years they lived in Florida, Kansas, Wisconsin, and South Carolina. She returned to Durham when her husband became ill in 1987 and remained there until 2006 when she moved to Ohio to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was an active member of the Mt Hermon Baptist Church in Durham for many years. She loved life and made friends easily wherever she went.

She was married to Haywood E Cheek from 1949 until his death in 1968. She then married Ernest G Herring in 1970 who died in 1988.

She leaves one daughter, Patricia (Thomas) Murphy of Hubbard, Ohio and a stepson, Guy (Cheryl) Herring of Charlotte N.C., and one Grandson, Christopher Murphy in Ohio. She was preceded in death by her 2 husbands, a sister, Carolyn Cole, her parents, and her stepmother Sophie Cole.

Arrangements were handled by the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home in Hubbard, OH.

Interment will be at Hubbard Union Cemetery.
