Obituary


HUBBARD Mary F. Phillips, 82, of Hubbard, died Saturday, February 14, 2004, at her residence. She was born August 18, 1921, in Blue Jay, WV, a daughter of Lloyd and Robbie Peek Dobbins. Formerly of Warren, she had resided in Hubbard since 1971.

Mary was a homemaker and a very active member of the Hubbard Church of the Nazarene where she had served in the following capacities: Sunday School teacher, Director of Vacation Bible School, Director of Children's Ministries, NWMS President, Publicity and Awareness secretary, Sunday School office responsibilities shared with her husband, the late Hartzell "Hop" Phillips. Mary displayed hard work and leadership helping the unfortunate people affected during the tornado of 1985. In 1987, she was presented the Distinguished Service Award, which is conferred on those members of the church who have contributed outstanding service and devotion to their local congregation. She was given the award for leading the congregation into a banner year of giving for World Evangelization through missions. In 1998, she received the Shared Life Certificate of Recognition for her unselfish example of sharing the love of Jesus Christ through her contribution to the church, community and the world.

Prior to coming to Hubbard, she was very active at the Warren First Church of the Nazarene where she taught Sunday School and was Director of Vacation Bible School. The first Bible School at Warren First Church had over 300 children in attendance. Mary was a promoter of Children's Church within the Nazarene denomination and introduced it at Warren First Church.

At Hubbard Manor, where she lived, among many other responsibilities, she handled Public Relations and was the Activities Director. She also did all the decorating for each affair.

Mary enjoyed traveling and had been a tour director with Eagle Tours.

As a young adult, Mary taught private kindergarten in West Virginia. She also was a Director of Jr. & Sr. high school girls drill team, the Royal Naval Association. She was the first female president of the PTA in West Virginia.

Her husband, Hartzell "Hop" Phillips, whom she married June 29, 1940, died October 6, 1995.


She leaves two sons, Dr. James L. Phillips of San Jose, CA and Robert J. (Annette) Phillips of Lyndhurst, OH; a sister, Beulah Robinson of Lynchburg, VA.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William Lloyd Dobbins, Jr. and Marvin Dobbins.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
