Cummins, Jr., Director HUBBARD Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at Corner House Christian Church with full military honors for Martin Edgar Thornton, 89, who died Wednesday afternoon November 23, 2016 peacefully at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center with his loved ones by his side. He was born June 4, 1927 at home in Petroleum, OH a son of Joseph and Roxie (Nycum) Thornton.

Mr. Thornton served in the United States Navy in WWII in the Pacific Theater. After leaving service, he met the love of his life Patricia Jean Taylor and spent the next 53 years married until she passed in 2002. He spent 35 years as an electrical draftsman for Westinghouse in Sharon, Pa and later at Taylor Winfield in Warren, OH. He was a member of Corner House Christian Church in Hubbard having served as Deacon, Trustee, and Sunday School Teacher. He also served as a cub scout leader, a Hubbard Community Youth League baseball coach and helped build ballfields at Harding Park and Farrell Park. He enjoyed restoring antique cars, bowling, golfing, camping, and paper flower making and was a member of the Shenango Valley Antique Car Club. Marty was also a member of the Hubbard VFW Post No. 3767 and the Disabled American Veterans.

He leaves two sons, Martin E. (Sue) Thornton Jr. of New Castle, PA and Kevin R. (Sharlene) Thornton of Hubbard; two daughters, Roxann (Wendell) Shelenberger of New Castle, PA and Heather (Jim) Phibbs of Hubbard, OH; 5 grandkids, Heidi, Luke, Bradley, Samantha, and Allison and 6 great grandchildren.

Marty was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Patricia and a brother, Wilson Thornton.

Family and friends may call one hour prior to the funeral services on Monday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Corner House Christian Church.

Interment will be at Corner House Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to the memorial fund of Corner House Christian Church, 6954 Chestnut Ridge Rd., Hubbard, OH 44425.
