Martin Matune, 94, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2015 at Northside Medical Center in Youngstown of natural causes.
He leaves his beloved wife of 61 years, Bernadean (Heckert) Matune; his daughter, Cheryl Matune (Nick Samaras), his daughter Darlene (Matune) Balzano (Michael Balzano); his sister Millie Matacic; as well as many close friends and a devoted extended family.
Born and raised in Campbell, OH, the son of Michael and Mary Matune, he was a resident of Hubbard, OH since 1954.
In his early years, Mr. Matune served in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC Camp) at Camp Ketchum in Idaho, earning Lifetime Membership status from the prestigious organization, before joining the United States Army in 1942, where he proudly defended our country in the Philippines in World War II.
Following his active duty, Mr. Matune immediately began employment with Youngstown Sheet and Tube in Campbell, remaining with the company until 1986. During this time he met his future wife, Bernadean Heckert, in 1950. The two were married in 1954 at Warren Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church, a union that remained until his passing.
Mr. Matune, a member of First Baptist Church in Hubbard, OH, had a passion for gardening and birdwatching and annually sought to grow the largest pumpkin in the city.
Calling Hours will be held Tuesday June 2nd from 5:30 – 7:30 pm and Wednesday June 3rd from 10:00 – 11:00 am at Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home in Hubbard. A funeral service will be held on June 3rd at 11:00 am at Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home, with interment immediately following at Hubbard Union Cemetery.
