Obituary

Liberty – Margaret G. DelBane, 88, passed away Sunday morning at Windsor House at Liberty Health Care Center, due to pneumonia related to Parkinson's disease.

Marge was born June 6, 1926, in Youngstown, a daughter of Michael and Katherine Kuzma Bobovnyik.

She was just shy of graduation from Chaney High School when she eloped, marrying Anthony J. DelBane ("Tony") of Hubbard, on June 14, 1944. She lived in Hubbard the rest of her life, until moving to a nursing home as her disease progressed.

Unless she was reading, often borrowing books from the Hubbard Library, or solving a crossword puzzle, Marge was on the go. In addition to raising her five children, a generation of Hubbard school children knew her as, "grandma," the friendly school crossing guard. "I just love the kids," she said upon her retirement in 2001 after 17 years. She was also a longtime Election Day poll worker at the Hubbard Fire Station.

For 20 years she owned and ran, with her husband, Madeline's Dairy in Hubbard. The Dairy's spaghetti sauce was made from her own tomatoes, which she canned each summer from the large garden in her backyard. A Slovak American by birth, she learned to cook Italian food from her mother-in-law, including a favorite, pan-fried meatballs with raisins.

Marge loved serving that same spaghetti and meatballs to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren each Sunday at noon. There was room for friends and neighbors to drop in, as she often squeezed a card table between two large dining room sets.

Each February Marge traveled with her husband to Daytona Beach, Florida, where he worked as a racing official during SpeedWeeks. She filled a suitcase with dozens of Youngstown's Plaza Donuts for friends at the track, only to replace the empty boxes with dozens of souvenir programs for family and friends back home.

When she wasn't working in the garden or watching her grandchildren, Marge liked painting, ceramics, quilting and collecting, gathering everything from porcelain clowns to skeleton keys, vintage compacts to knick-knacks. She was also a member of the Hubbard Historical Society

Marge leaves three sons, Mike and Bob (Andrea), both of Hubbard, and Denny (Carol) of Mayfield Heights, Ohio; two daughters, Kathy DelBane and Patti Smith, both of Hubbard; a younger brother, David Bobovnyik of Boardman; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Tony, died September 25, 2003. Her parents, four brothers, Leo, Stephen, Sylvester and Robert Bobovnyik, and two sisters, Rosemary Bobovnyik and Josephine Cianciola, also preceded her in death.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home, Hubbard. A funeral service will be held the next morning at 9:30 a.m. A mass will follow at St. Patrick's church at 10am with a luncheon immediately after the service.

The family, especially her daughter Patti, wishes to thank the staff at LHCC and Dr. John DelliQuardri for the four years of care and concern. You are the best!

Memorial donations may be made to the Activities Center in Windsor House at Liberty Health Care Center, 1355 Churchill-Hubbard Rd. , Youngstown, OH, 44505, or the Hubbard Historical Society, McBride House, 27 Hager Street, Hubbard, OH 44425.
