HUBBARD Jerry R. Deal, 70, died Sunday morning June 17, 2012 at his home. He was born July 9, 1941 in Notomine, WV, the only child of Roy T. and Kathleen M. Stanley Deal and moved to Hubbard in 1965 coming from West Virginia.
Jerry was a welder at Munroe Inc., retiring in 2003 and had formerly worked for GATX for 24 years. Jerry also taught welding at the New Castle School of Trades. He served with the United States Army, having been a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne in Ft. Bragg, NC.
Jerry started his coaching career in 1968, coaching Minor League, Little League, Babe Ruth, Little B, Big B and also coached at Hubbard High School from 2000-2004 and Cardinal Mooney from 2007-2008. His 13-year-old Babe Ruth team won the state title in 1998 and the 15-year-old Babe Ruth team was state runner up in 2000. He started playing with the Old Timers, where he formed his own team, Ohio Bucks and took his team to the Roy Hobbs World Series every year since 1995.
Jerry was a member of the Ohio Umpires Association, the Hubbard Gridiron Club and the Hubbard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3767. He loved fishing, was an avid golfer, enjoyed NASCAR, tending to his garden, motorcycles and watching his grandchildren play sports.
He leaves his wife, the former Shirlene M. Mainous, whom he married December 23, 1960; a son, Alan (Patricia Pompura) of Canfield; two daughters, Nancy E. O'Hara of Hubbard and Amy Kurcon of Poland; eight grandchildren, Joseph (Laura) O'Hara, Anthony and Marcus O'Hara; Christina, Katie and Kelly Deal and Dylan and Rachel Kurcon and his cat Charlie.
Funeral services will be held Friday 11:00 AM at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home.
Family and friends may call on Thursday 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home.
