HUBBARD Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 5:00 PM at St. Patrick Church with visitation 2 hours prior from 3:00 to 5:00 PM for Jean Chuey, 91, who died Friday evening July 20, 2012 at her home. She was born April 23, 1921 in Sharon, PA the fourth and last child to Katherine Harris and Howard Way and was a lifelong area resident.
Jean lived a simple and normal life in Sharon, having good memories of East Ward School and what was then called Junior High School. Her father's work took them to Youngstown, where she graduated from The Rayen School and was involved in numerous activities. Jean's advanced education at Youngstown College was interrupted by the war years. Her personal contribution was at the Carnegie Illinois Assembly Plant in Farrell where the M-1 Tanks were built. All jobs at that time were for "Men Only" so it became an entirely new learning experience for the female generation. She had even become a lifeguard at the Idora Park Pool.
The war ended and thus began a whole new world of freedom and Jean's life was no different than most. She married Steven Edward Chuey November 27, 1947 and lived in Cleveland where he received his Law Degree from Case Western Reserve and they were blessed with their firstborn, Mary Katherine Chuey, who is a lawyer in Cincinnati. Jean's efforts to finish college were again interrupted by another trip to the maternity ward with the birth of their second child, Rita Jean Chuey, the mother of two who works for Hospice of the Valley and lives in Brookfield. Shortly thereafter, Steven Robert Chuey arrived, Rob now resides in Cincinnati as a patent lawyer with Proctor and Gamble.
In 1973 her husband's MS worsened, so Jean went to work for Judge Joseph Luarde at the Girard Municipal Court and later Judge (Papa) Bernard which amounted to 15 years of stimulating, meaningful and worthwhile employment.
Jean wishes to be remembered as a volunteer; it seemed that is where she fit in. She was an active member at St. Patrick Church, the church festival, the St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank and occasionally being a substitute teacher at St. Patrick School. Jean also volunteered at Ursuline High School for her children and grandchild.
Jean was active in the Girl Scouts, having served as President of the Lake to River Council, the YWCA as a member of the Board of Directors, PTA and swimming classes at St. John's Pool in Sharon. She also volunteered at Northside Hospital Medical Center, the Butler Institute of American Art and was an Election Official.
She is survived by her three children, daughter-in-law, Martina (Stiver) Chuey and six grandchildren, Jessica Cosca, Caitlyn and Ian Robertson and Cathryn, Clara and Charles Chuey.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, Dorothy Brunson and two brothers, Robert and Jerry Way.
Jean thanked God daily for her wonderful life. Everyone who knew her and made that possible, thank you all for being her friends, her family and her mentors. She began her life alone and she leaves it that way, but rest assured she enjoyed every minute while she was here.
Jean's family wishes to thank Hospice of the Valley for the wonderful care she received while in their care.
Interment will take place at Hubbard Union Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home.
