HUBBARD A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Michael Swierz officiating for James Edward Vernell, 80, who died on Wednesday morning November 4, 2015 peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 6, 1935 at his childhood home in Hubbard, a son of James and Lucy Carano Vernillo and was a lifelong Hubbard resident.
Mr. Vernell, a 1954 graduate of Hubbard High School, served with the United States Army from 1958 to 1964 having been stationed in Chalons France. James was a devout Catholic and a lifelong member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church. He was a tow motor operator for Powell Pressed Steel for 18 years until their closing and then went on to work for Cleveland Steel in Niles for 11 years.
James enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and most of all loved spending time with his family and close friends.
He leaves his wife of 54 years, the former Claire L. Smith from Duluth, MN, whom he married February 11, 1961; two sons, Richard (Maria Marripoda) Vernell of Milan, Italy and Steven (Linda) Vernell of McDonald; two daughters, Christine George of Sarasota, FL and Barbara Vernell of Hubbard; a sister, Julia Smaldino of Youngstown and his five grandchildren, Brandon Caraway and Ryan, Ashley, Giulia and Nicholas Vernell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Louis and John and five sisters, Louise, Carmel, Anna, Rita and Rae.
Family and friends may call on Saturday, one hour prior to the Mass from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church.
The family requests memorial tributes take the form of donations to St. Patrick School, 38 E. Water St., Hubbard, OH 44425.
Interment will be at Hubbard Union Cemetery.
