CHILLICOTHE, IL Gerald P. Maietta Sr., 76, formerly of Hubbard, OH, died Monday morning, September 16, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown, OH. He was born May 11, 1926, in Springfield, IL, a son of Rev. Michael Carmen and Esther Gardella Maietta and lived in Hubbard from 1961 until moving to Chillicothe, IL in 1996.

He was a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 27 years retiring in 1987, after working for several Youngstown Post Offices. Mr. Maietta was a member of the Northminster Presbyterian Church, Peoria, IL and a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hubbard, OH, where he had served as a member of the choir and a Sunday school teacher. While living in Hubbard, he was a member of the Hubbard Christians in Action, a volunteer lay minister at Park Vista Retirement Center, a former Little League umpire and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He enjoyed bowling and was a radio operator in the South Pacific during World War II while serving with the Army Air Corps.

His first wife, the former Ida Mae Sieling, whom he married May 5, 1944, died October 7, 1989. He leaves his wife, the former Wanda M. Keith Nixon, whom he married November 13, 1991; two sons, Gerald P. (Victoria) Maietta Jr. of Mineral Ridge and Frank W. (Wendy) Maietta of Hubbard; a daughter, Joyce L. Kowalski of Hubbard; two brothers, Rev. Michael Carmen (Margaret) Maietta Jr. of Crown Point, IN and Ronald (Sandy) Maietta of Dyer, IN; a stepson, Nicholas Nixon of Lacon, IL; three stepdaughters, Marlene Culvertson and Carolyn (Jim) Crose, both of Chillicothe, IL and Janette (Mike) Adkinson of West Palm Beach, FL; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; 11 step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren. His parents, a granddaughter, Abbey Jean Maietta, a brother, Ernie Maietta, two sisters, Rose Bond and Grace Maietta are deceased.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Friday at the First Presbyterian Church of Hubbard.

There are no calling hours.
