Daniel Albert Chiaberta Sr. (Papa Chia), age 79, of Hubbard, Ohio, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.
Born on June 10,1947 in Youngstown Ohio, Danny was a devoted husband, parent, grandfather, brother, uncle, & friend who touched the lives of everyone around him. A proud veteran, he served as a Private First Class in the United States Army and continued his dedication to his country as an Army Reservist. After starting his career with Conrail Railroad, Dan chose a new path to achieve a better work-life balance as his family grew. He joined the food industry as a food broker supervisor, building a distinguished career marked by dedication and leadership. His exceptional work earned him top industry awards and ultimately led to his promotion to Business Manager. He concluded his career at the Youngstown Air Force Reserve Station.
Deeply involved in his community, Dan was a dedicated member and past President of the Kiwanis Club, as well as a coach for HCYL sports, where he loved mentoring and influencing countless young athletes over the years. An avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer, Dan found immense joy in the outdoors. Above all, he loved watching his kids and grandkids in all of their sports and activities, and he was a passionate fan of the Cleveland Indians—never missing a chance to listen to his idol, announcer Tom Hamilton, whom Dan always called a true legend.
Dan is survived by his loving wife of 58.5 years, Mary Sue Chiaberta (Sorice), daughter Suzanne Laird (Lonnie) of Hubbard and Daniel Chiaberta Jr. (Amy) of Boardman, his siblings; Albert Chiaberta Jr. (Sharon) Hubbard, Joseph Chiaberta of Wisconsin, Michael (Lori) Chiaberta of Illinois, Renee Weber (Mark) of Wisconsin, and Lisa Pascarella (Dave) of Florida; his cherished grandsons Anthony Laird, Ryan Laird, and Daniel Chiaberta III, along with many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his faithful, loving dog, Sophie, his constant shadow and devoted four-legged companion who never left his side.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Danielle Chiaberta, his father Albert Chiaberta Sr. and his mother Frances Chiaberta.
Family and friends may gather to celebrate Dan's life on Friday, August 14, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Kelley-Cummins Funeral Home, 709 N. Main Street, Hubbard, Ohio. Military honors will be rendered at 12:15 p.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Memorial Mass at 1:00 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dan’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a charity close to his heart that he faithfully supported.
A special note of heartfelt gratitude goes to his beloved family, whose unconditional love, unwavering support, and devoted care brought Dan so much comfort and peace. Additional thanks are extended to the compassionate team at Southern Care Hospice for their gentle guidance and support.
